How to Use Essential Oils Safely during Pregnancy!

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Pregnancy is a very complex phenomenon that brings about tremendous hormonal changes, especially in the first trimester. As essential oils contain powerful chemical components, they should not be administered during pregnancy at a dilution rate higher than 1% and always under the care of a clinical aromatherapist or medical professional. I highly recommend using only essential oils considered safe for pregnancy based on current research - Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis), and Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), which can be used for calming nausea, indigestion, skin rashes, and minor aches and pains as topical, external application in a properly diluted carrier oil. Always remember that terms like "therapeutic, food or medical grade" are not regulated by any governmental body and are typically used for marketing purposes. As the Alliance of International Aromatherapists suggests, quality essential oils are accompanied by GC/MS reports and labeled with both common and botanical (Latin or Greek) name of the plant from which they are derived.

Likewise, most herbs are contraindicated during pregnancy as they may be uterine stimulants, laxatives, hormonal "influencers," bioactive, or outright toxic. Ingesting any herbs during pregnancy and lactation should only be done under the direction and supervision of a licensed or registered healthcare practitioner.
